Memorial Day Weekend, 2006, Shady Pines Campground officially opened the Shady Pines Mining Company,. Our mining company features a fully functional giant mining sluice box.

What is a Sluice Box - A sluice is long trough powered by water. The water power forces dirt through the our screen boxes.  The sloping trough or inclined flume allows the sand to be washed away leaving only the heavier particles, gems, fossils, and other artifacts to be caught.  

The Shady Pines sluice was built on our own campground near the Campground Store. Our goal is to offer our campers and visitors  an activity that both adults and children could enjoy. You simply purchase your bags of dirt in the Campground Store and using our specially designed screens, you'll be panning like an expert in just minutes. Each bag contains a wide variety of  gems, fossils, rubies, emeralds, arrow heads (depending on which bag you purchase) just to name a few of the treasures.. Every bag is guaranteed to contain many ounces of treasures your children will cherish for years to come.
